Photos suggesting stable income. Age brackets where loneliness peaks and app fluency dips. None of this makes targets foolish; it makes them legible to a machine built for reading exactly these signals at scale.
Why targeting beats vigilance
Advice like “just be careful” fails because the con is built to defeat carefulness — weeks of patient warmth engineered against your specific signals. The defense that works isn’t suspicion; it’s structure: platforms where fake profiles can’t exist in the first place, and verification that happens before anyone appears.
